Great talk, Max. Fascinating stuff – I look forward to reading your piece in ARCS. On this very issue, there is a telling exchange that takes place in the U.S. Congress in February 1845. It is titled “Debate on the Annexation of Canada” in the Appendix to the Congressional Globe (U.S. Senate, 28th Congress, 2nd s.), but it really is all about Texas and slavery. Obviously this is after the Patriot War, but I think it really speaks to the issues you raise here. All best.
